red bull —São Paulo pay phones provide free digital travel information
Pay phones near bus stops in São Paulo were hacked to provide real time digital information about bus times and locations in October 2016. Geo-data was used to identify the location of bus stops; combining the information with the city’s transport system, the estimated arrival time of the next bus could be calculated, and converted into speech. The project – which used a toll-free number advertised on buses and in bus shelters – was part of Red Bull’s Red Bull Basement: a festival designed to inspire change in the city through the use of new technology applications.
