Last summer, we reported on Pinterest's ban on weight loss ads following research that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a steep rise in unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders. Starting 1 July 2021, the platform prohibited all ads with weight loss language and imagery. Now, Pinterest has released data on how related searches developed over the past year.
Innovation Update
In its Global Body Neutrality Report, Pinterest reveals that global searches containing the term 'weight loss' dropped by 20% from July 2021 to May 2022, while searches for 'quick and healthy meals' were a whopping 65 times higher during mid-April to mid-May 2022, compared to the same period last year.
Also up: 'healthy food motivation' (13 times higher), 'accept your body quotes' (three times higher), and 'positive self-affirmations' (five times higher). Pinterest believes searches around healthy habits and body positivity are rising as its users change their conversations around self-confidence, mental wellness and well-being.
