So the dust has finally settled on our 2016 Trend Event Series, undoubtedly the most ambitious undertaking TrendWatching have attempted in 15+ years of boundary-pushing.
By now, anyone who has spent even the most minimal time on our site, our social channels or reading our emails will be more than aware of the sheer scale of our self-proclaimed Trend Tour. So we won’t dwell too much on what we’ve already told you ;)
5 events. 5 weeks. 4 continents
1500 attendees. 40 external speakers.
250 balloons blown up by 40+ employees on tour.
But, running alongside the countless lightbulb moments our attendees were experiencing, were moments of pressure and panic, mania and madness, and, well, downright disbelief as 1the team pulled out all the stops to ensure everything went completely almost completely to plan.
For our Singapore Trend Event, is just so happened that, in celebration of 50 Years of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic ties, Asia’s biggest Rody toy exhibition was held at the National Design Centre (NDC) for the first time this October. This meant that ourselves and our attendees were tucked inside the venue (away from the torrential downpour in the streets) with 250+ inflatable hippos. As you do…
Sydney? The Melbourne Cup was in full swing so, naturally, a marching band proceeded to interrupt a killer presentation by our very own Maxwell Luthy. Always one for musical accompaniment where possible, he styled it out… just about ;)
By the time we got to the Chicago Trend Event, there was the small matter results for a certain election being announced the day before. The result, as I’m sure you can recall, was a bit of a shocking one, so we had to amend some content to reflect a reaffirmed need for optimism amid the dismay.
Fortunately, we had Adriana di Fazio on hand to help us provide this much-needed Moment of Mindfulness. Our attendees (and team on the ground!) were grateful for a chance to gain some perspective, refresh their thoughts and then tackle the day ahead. And our quick-thinking analysts ensured there was some light relief embedded into their presentations, too...
And as for London and Amsterdam, we were lucky enough to have the whole roster of TW employees based in both cities, so the level of support, good humour and all-in-it-together mentality ensured that whatever was happening on the outside world didn’t have any adverse effects on the events.
Which meant we got to spend more time with our favourite speaker of the tour..
... and all of this against a backdrop of some of the most beautiful locations across the world!

So, as we said at the start of the post: and breathe!
It may have been hectic our end, but it’s worth every minute when our efforts are validated by our attendees. Meeting the masses of TW super fans in person is always a humbling experience, and the opportunity to bring everything we do to life in such amazing settings is one we relish every year.
And, of course, a huge shout out to our army of Spotters and volunteers who helped out around the world. We couldn’t do it without all of you!
Same again next year? We’ll see about that ;)BLOG HOME
